The crochet filter is not a button inside TikTok or Instagram. It is an AI image edit: you give an AI tool one of your photos and ask it to redraw the picture as if you were a small handmade doll made of yarn, the kind crocheters call amigurumi. Your hair turns into thick strands of yarn, your clothes get visible stitches, your face becomes a round doll face, and in the version that went viral, the room or street behind you turns into crochet too.
This page is an independent guide. We don't run a generator and we never see your photo. Instead we compare the free tools that can already do this, give you prompts you can copy, and explain how to fix the usual problems. Every button opens the real tool on its own website.
How to do the crochet filter in 3 steps
- Pick a good photo. One clear photo, face large in the frame, good light, no sunglasses. A simple background turns into yarn more evenly than a crowded one.
- Open a free AI image tool and upload the photo. ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot all accept an uploaded photo on their free plans; Vheer has a no-signup image-to-image page. See the comparison below.
- Paste a crochet prompt and generate. Use the short prompt below or a longer one from our ChatGPT prompt page. If the result doesn't look like you, change one thing and try again; our fix list covers the common cases.
Best free tools for the crochet filter, compared
We checked each tool's own help or pricing pages on 2026-10-20. None of them publish an exact free image count, and limits change, so treat this as a starting point.
| Tool | Cost | Account needed? | What its own pages say |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Free plan | Yes, free account | Free plan includes uploading images and creating images, with limits shown in the app when reached |
| Gemini | Free | Yes, Google account | Nano Banana image editing is free with usage limits; editing photos requires age 18+ |
| Microsoft Copilot | Free | Sign-in needed for image creation | Accepts image uploads; free image creation depends on capacity and limits |
| Vheer | Free tier | No signup for free tools | Advertises unlimited free generations with no signup; some models cost credits |
Which one to start with? The trend started in ChatGPT, so if you already have a ChatGPT account, start there. If you use Google every day, Gemini is just as easy. If you don't want to make any account, try Vheer, but read our notes on no-login tools first, because you are handing your face photo to a smaller company.
A ready-to-copy crochet filter prompt
This is our own suggested wording, not an official prompt. Upload your photo first, then paste:
Redraw this photo as a handmade crochet amigurumi doll scene. Turn the person into a small stuffed doll made of yarn, with visible crochet stitches, yarn hair in the same color and style, and the same clothes, colors, pose and expression. Give the face a round doll shape with large glossy doll eyes in the same eye color and a small stitched smile. Turn the background and every object into crochet too, keeping the same layout and lighting. Keep the person recognizable. No text or watermark.
Want only the person in yarn and a real background? Replace the background sentence with: "Keep the background as a real, sharp photo." More variations (couples, pets, close-up portrait, Spanish version) are on the prompt page.
Tips for a doll that actually looks like you
- Face size matters most. If your face is a tiny part of the photo, the AI has little to copy. Crop the photo first so your head and shoulders fill much of the frame.
- Light from the front. Harsh shadows and backlight make the eyes and skin tone drift.
- Name the details you care about. Add a short line like "keep my round glasses, freckles and curly red hair". Short and specific beats long and vague.
- One change per retry. If the second try changes three things, you won't know which one helped.
- Ask for the shape you'll post. Add "vertical 9:16" for TikTok and Reels or "square" for a profile picture.
- Logos and text on clothes often come out garbled. Ask for them to become plain knitted fabric.
Pets, couples and posting
The look works on dogs and cats too; see the pet guide. For two or more people in one photo, faces sometimes blend together; the couples and family guide has a group prompt and fixes. If you want to post it the way the trend does, read how the TikTok trend works.
A note on honesty and consent
Use your own photo, or one where everybody pictured has agreed. Don't use photos of children you aren't responsible for, celebrities or strangers. Keep the platform's "AI-generated" label on when you post. The result is a picture of a doll that doesn't exist; if you'd like a real one, many crocheters take custom orders and your AI picture makes a handy reference.
