Crochet Filter ChatGPT Prompt: Copy-Ready Versions
The crochet filter trend started in ChatGPT: a creator uploaded her photos, asked ChatGPT to redraw them as crocheted dolls, and shared her wording with everyone who asked in the comments. There is no single "official" crochet filter prompt. Below are our own suggested prompts, written to get the same look, with notes on when to use each one. Copy them, then edit freely.
How to use a crochet filter prompt in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and sign in. A free account works: OpenAI's Free plan includes uploading images and creating images, with usage limits (OpenAI doesn't publish a fixed number; the app tells you when you've hit it and when it resets).
- Start a new chat. Click the + or paperclip and upload one photo.
- Paste one of the prompts below in the same message and send.
- Wait. Image generation can take a minute or more.
- If it's close but not right, reply in the same chat with one short correction, for example: "Same image, but make the eyes brown and keep my glasses." That usually works better than starting over.
- Download the image from the image view.
Prompt 1: the classic full-scene look (solo)
Best for the look most people posted: you and everything around you turned into yarn.
Redraw this photo as a handmade crochet amigurumi doll scene. Turn the person into a small stuffed doll made of yarn, with visible crochet stitches, yarn hair in the same color and style, and the same clothes, colors, pose and expression. Give the face a round doll shape with large glossy doll eyes in the same eye color and a small stitched smile. Turn the background and every object into crochet too, keeping the same layout and lighting. Keep the person recognizable. No text or watermark.
Prompt 2: doll in a real-world photo
Some people prefer the doll standing in a real, sharp background. This makes the doll pop and keeps location details readable.
Turn only the person in this photo into a handmade crochet amigurumi doll with visible yarn stitches, yarn hair matching the original color and style, and crocheted versions of the same clothes. Keep the same pose and expression. Keep the background exactly as a real, sharp photograph. Make the doll look like a real yarn toy photographed in this place, with natural shadows. No text or watermark.
Prompt 3: close-up crochet portrait
For profile pictures. Works best with a head-and-shoulders photo.
Make a close-up portrait of the person in this photo as a crocheted amigurumi doll head and shoulders. Soft yarn texture with clear stitches, yarn hair in the same color, length and parting, the same glasses and earrings if present, round doll face with glossy eyes in the same eye color, gentle blush. Plain knitted background in a soft color. Square image. No text.
Prompt 4: couples and groups
Use this when there are two or more people. The extra sentence about not mixing people reduces blending.
Redraw this photo as a crochet amigurumi doll scene. Turn each person into their own separate yarn doll, keeping each person's own hair color, skin tone, clothes and position in the photo. Do not merge people or swap features between them, and do not add or remove anyone. Visible crochet stitches everywhere, the background turned into crochet with the same layout. Keep everyone recognizable. No text.

Prompt 5: Spanish version (fotos tejidas)
The trend began in Spanish-speaking TikTok, where it's called fotos tejidas or filtro tejido. If you'd rather write in Spanish, this is our own Spanish wording:
Transforma esta foto en una escena de muñeco amigurumi tejido a crochet hecho a mano. Convierte a la persona en un muñeco de lana con puntadas visibles, el mismo peinado y color de pelo en lana, la misma ropa, pose y expresión. Cara redonda de muñeco con ojos brillantes del mismo color. Convierte también el fondo en crochet, con la misma distribución. Que se reconozca a la persona. Sin texto.
How to write your own crochet prompt
Most good versions have the same five parts. Keep each one short:
- Material: "handmade crochet amigurumi", "visible yarn stitches".
- What to keep: hair color and style, clothes, pose, expression, glasses.
- Doll features: round face, glossy doll eyes, stitched smile, blush.
- Background: crochet too, or keep it real.
- Output: "vertical 9:16", "square", "no text or watermark".
Very long prompts are not always better. If a long prompt keeps failing, cut it down to these five lines and add back one detail at a time.
What to do if ChatGPT refuses or the face drifts
ChatGPT may decline some photos, for example images of children or of public figures, depending on its current policies. Use a photo of yourself or of adults who agreed. If the doll doesn't look like you, the most reliable fix is a better photo: bigger face, front light, no sunglasses. Our troubleshooting page has more. If you've run out of free images, the same prompts work in Gemini and the other free options.
